Is Brett Davis Lying to Voters to Score Political Points or Just Asleep at the Switch?

GOP candidate calls for “immediate end to ill-advised program” he voted for in 2007-08 legislative session

MIDDLETON – Henry Sanders, Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor, today questioned why State Representative Brett Davis has publicly condemned a proposal he, himself, voted for. The Oregon-area legislator released a statement Wednesday attacking an identification card proposal he and many other Republicans supported in the 2007-2008 State Budget. “Either Brett Davis is lying to voters to score cheap political points, or he was just asleep at the switch and didn’t read the bill he voted for,” said Sanders.  “I’m not sure which is worse, but Wisconsin certainly deserves better from its elected officials.”

The identification card proposal was introduced through the legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance by Representatives Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford) and Mark Pocan (D-Madison) as part of the 2007-2008 Department of Corrections budget.1 The measure passed with a unanimous 16-0 bi-partisan vote, and was forwarded to the full legislature.2  Davis was one of 23 Republican representatives voting in favor of the bill.3

“This is just another example of the revisionist history the Republicans are presenting to voters this election, but the facts are clear,” said Sanders. “Before Brett Davis sends out charges of government waste he may want to check his own voting record first.”
